calakmul-1Concerned about the ecology and México´s natural reserves, the Todotulum crew headed for the Calakmul reserve, in the State of Campeche, Mexico. It is located between the 19° 12′ 00″ and 17° 48′ 39 North latitude, and 89° 09′ 04″ east longitude and 90° 29′ 05″ west greenwich longitude, colliding with the Hopelchén and Champotón regions, and the state of Quintana Roo, México, Belize Country, as well coliding to the Escárcega and Candelaria regions.

The Calakmul reserve is part of the humid Mexican tropical jungle, where we can find a vast variety of eco systems and vegetative communities, located in it`s boundaries, giving and impressive and abundant plant life

The animal kingdom in the Calakmul reserve holds and endless diversity of species. Reptiles like iguanas, snakes and turtles, mammals; rabbits, ocelot, squirrel, tlacuache, tepezcuincle, otter, wild pig, tapir, deer, monkeys, tigers and jaguars (including the black version, or panther). we can find birds like toucan, macaws, owl, parrots and turkeys. We can also find and interminable list of insects, which one of them is enormous, a giant beetle called “Megazoma” All these species are protected, thanks to their endangered status.

This Jungle environment is home for a huge diversity but is also a place where the ancient Mayas leave their track. Cities like Becán, Río Bec, Xpuhil Chicanná and Calakmul itself are proof of the Mayan master to dominate the elements. Tourism in this zone is based in the Mayan culture archeological zones within its territory. Also all the surroundings are know as the Calakmul Reserve Biosphere.

The todotulum crew headed up for an expedition to the Calakmul reserve, witnessing the beauty and mejesty of the place, as Manuel del Monte (from Reforestamos Mexico) told us, “we are here to check out the place, talk with people and look for the best way to improve the tree and plants population in the zone”
